Speed : SCP vs FTP

Post by Bryan76 »

Asus Transformer Prime, Power mode enabled.
Using System tuner to monitor CPU usage.

On my Ubuntu server, using openSSH server and vsftpd.

Connecting to the server via local wifi network (802.11g)

Downloading to the "built in" sd card (i.e. the non-removable 32GB or 64GB that comes with the device), not the /removable SD card that you can insert into the microSD slot.

When transferring via scp from the openSSH server: Speed transfers were about 400-500 KB/s and CPU usage was pegged at about 65-85% using all 4 cores.

When transferring via ftp from the vsftpd server: Speed transfers were about 750-900 KB/s and CPU usage was running at about 40-80% bouncing between 3 and 4 cores.

Obviously this makes sense that an encrypted transfer will take more CPU, but I didn't expect that much of a throughput difference. And this is on what is arguably the most power Android device currently on the market.

Just wanted to give others some info..

Okay, something else must have been hitting my server hard drive. FTP speeds have now increased to 1.3 - 1.5 MB/s with the same CPU load SCP speeds and loads are the same.
