I just installed 2.9.9.4 on Android 4.0.3, and noticed the same problem. Leaving the remote directory blank, I could connect (SFTP to a Linux SSHD server) but not see any files or directories. Using a relative remote "Photos" I could see everything in that directory, but trying to change directories...
