Android Music Player not indexing /showing mp3 files

Postby vkelman » Wed Oct 21, 2009 7:40 pm

Hello! I have troubles with Android (Android Dev Phone 1 == HTC G1, Android 1.6) not listing some mp3 files. Browsing SD card (using a file manager Android itself or by connecting it through USB to my PC) shows all the files, but Android Music Player does not show them. I posted this question to many Android forums, but no one answered so far.
I tried different things, and finally deleted all the albums using Android UI. Now, I still see all the actual mp3 files sitting on SD card, but music player do not show any! I was told that Android is supposed to automatically index mp3 files located in any folder on SD card, but it does not happen. Recently I found some old message speaking about AndExplorer and internal / external files. I installed AndExplorer.
On a device, under audio (external) I see a bunch of system audio files, but no mp3 files I'm trying to listen (which still sit on SD card). Under audio (internal) there are no files at all.

What I'm supposed to do to be able to listen my music again? Your help is highly appreciated!

Android comes with content providers. AndExplorer displays all default content providers. On Android phones Audio (External) maps to all MP3, OGG WAV ... on SDCARD. Audio (Internal) mapped to ringtone but read access have been removed since new updates.

I found a solution for this Android bug on a Russian-speaking Google Wave devoted to Android! By the way, I encourage everybody to join Google Wave ASAP (no, I already used all my invitations).
A solution, or should I say - a workaround? - is to use Meridian Player http://sites.google.com/site/eternalsandbox/Home instead of Android's own Music Player. Meridian Player allows to forcibly re-scan media files.
As I was told on Meridian's forum, "Yes, it is an Android's media scanner issue, and I also don't know what's the actual behavior of the auto scanning. Before 1.1 it will do a full scan each time replugging SD card, but now it does not. Even manually invoke (by Meridian) sometimes fail...Hope they can fix this soon."

I wonder why Meridian developers know that, while Google Android developers do not.
