To get full read/write access on your External SDCARD under Android 5+, you need to click "External" button in General configuration tab and select SDCARD in the file chooser prompted.

Same for local folder in sync tab (if you plan to sync a folder).

I've tried this and the card does not show up below Recent. Nothing there. HTC One M9 with Android 5.0.2.

Maybe worth noting: I can download manually to a variety of places, including what seems to be the external SD card (/SDcard2?). However, sync always fails, no matter where the local path is.

SDCard selection is not visible by default on some device. Do you need the "..." at top right? Click on it to make SDCARD visible then you should be able to select it.

Sadly, sync still fails with a red file list. :(

Ok, now re-create a new configuration from scratch. Select External SDCARD in General tab for Local directory, then go to sync tab, click browse and select another folder which will be under SDCARD, click save and try again.

No joy. I think, however, this time I may have glimpsed a java error before the report of red filenames.

SDCARD is hidden by default, you have to click "..." and then "Show SDCARD". See screenshots below. For Android 6+, you need AndFTP 4.5 or higher.
