Background Transfers

When I use FTPPro and leave it to run downloading files 9 times out of 10 it usually stops the download or fails.
I was hoping this application would run in the background and download files 100% seamlessly without me having to disconnect and resume all the time - even though in Advanced options i have retry selected.
Is there an issue that file transfers cannot work with conflicting background processes or when the device goes into sleep mode?
